What Will The UN Decide – Libya In The Searchlight

by David Bennett on March 17, 2011

Ghaddafi is approaching Benghazi. He is not doing it single handedly. He has superior firepower but more than that, he pretty obviously has substantial support from those who are actually in the tanks and trucks of the Libyan army that is heading east towards Benghazi.

So this is a civil war.

And that gives the U.N. exactly what justification for imposing a no-fly zone and bombing radar installations?

Obama must have egg on his face because it is only a week or two ago that he suggested that Ghaddafi should go.

Cameron wants to wipe Ghaddafi’s face in it because of Lockerbie and Abdelbaset Mohmed Ali al-Megrahi.

Both of them know that there is little chance that a Ghaddafi Libya of the future would deal with either of them.

What a mess.

A few days ago I was thinking that Ghaddafi might be thanking his God for the Japanese tsunami that was taking the heat off him.

Now Libya has taken the front page again.

UPDATE
From The UN Security Council website:

17 March 2011 – The Security Council adopted a resolution by 10 votes to zero, with 5 abstentions, including China and Russia, authorizing Member States “to take all necessary measures… to protect civilians and civilian populated areas under threat of attack in the Libyan Arab Jamhariya, including Benghazi, while excluding an occupation force.”
