Grand Ideas And Utopian Visions

by David Bennett on November 14, 2011

Listening to David Cameron speak this evening about the European Union being beset by pie-in-the-sky grand ideas and utopian visions, makes me think of the differences between European law and English law.

European law is founded on Roman law, which is based up broad principles.

English law has developed in exactly the opposite way – by inching forward beyond a skeleton framework.

So I think that there are deep psychological and conceptual differences between Europe and the UK.

Bridging that gap requires an open mind both ways.
