62 Percent Turnout In First Round Of Egyptian Elections

by David Bennett on December 4, 2011

One commentator joked that the 62% turnout in first round of the Egyptian elections was the highest since the time of the Pharaohs.

The Islamist parties did well and the secular parties are struggling.

For my part, I am struggling to understand a 62% turnout.

The country went through a people’s revolution: hundreds of thousands stood their ground in Tahrir Square. They ostensibly threw over a dictator who had made their lives a misery over the past 40 years – and yet only 62% turned out to vote?
